ARTIST'S STATEMENT: Concerning inquiry into the self and identity, the work investigates the differentiation between the self and a reflected, or a virtual self. There exists a relationship between the true self and the reflected self, and this notion is explored as a twinship in the conveyance of the self. As the one resembles the other, there is a constant flow of reference from one to the other. Although they resemble each other the virtual self becomes contradictional ‘other’ to the true self and vise versa. This differentiation between the self and the virtual copy of the self (which is also acknowledged as a real body) becomes apparent in the subject matter of my work. In this body of work different textures and surfaces are combined to contribute to the ideology of the self. The self is shown to consist of fragments, but also to utilize these fragments to exist as an entity in its own right. The concept of differentiation is thus extended from the differentiation between the virtual and the real to a differentiation of textures and a differentiation between the self as fragmented and as a whole. In the process of constructing these works technological aids were used in combination with manual techniques to strengthen the idea of differentiation. The materialisation of the transcendental sublime is depicted as a reflection in a surface like a mirror is fleeting, shown in this body of work as an eternal image which contributes to the construction of identity. Identity is conveyed as a complex and multi-dimensional concept, but one which exist of a number of fragments which contributes to a cohesive perception. The nature in which the self is shown here is sincere and honest, without pretension. -- Estie Serfortein, September 2007 |
