Kay
Potts is an American born sculptor, who moved to South Africa, via Italy and Belgium, eleven years ago. She has lived and operated her own fine
art/foundry studio, Boudiccea Productions, in Pretoria ever since.
Kay
Potts’s latest solo exhibition entitled Hush
is a comprehensive embodiment of a diverse spectrum of works. Most
works are in bronze, with an eclectic mix of other medias including, stone,
wood, steel and clay.
Hush is a loaded word only given meaning through context. It is
used to comfort children after scary movies, nightmares, thunderstorms and
abuse. It is equally offered to adults as blind comfort, derogatory
statement of management, or a command to shut up… be silent… be not there.
About
her own works and Hush, Kay says: “Most of my works deal with fear.
The kind of fear that only the individual can create for oneself.
However, this is not a fearful nor scary exhibition, but more of a query and
a journey of discovery. The range of fears we share as humans is the
great common denominator. Fear is like a loose tooth, we just have to
keep fiddling with it. My fiddling has taken the form of sculpture.
For the last twenty plus years, I have endeavoured to explore the pathways
that exist in our minds and the fears that prevent us from following them.
I have come no closer to an answer, except the I have realised it must lie
within the individual. I humbly hope that my sculptural explorations
encourage an inward spiritual journey of discovery for the viewer and that
the experience is uplifting.”
The sculpture exhibition will be Visually
Impaired – Friendly. Title cards will be provided in Braille.
The artist will be available for guided tours where tactile examination of
the pieces will be welcomed.
