PHILIP BADENHORST, The Missing Year
|

The
latest exhibition of paintings by Philip Badenhorst entitled The Missing
Year, explores personal memory and presence. In this series of
paintings, Badenhorst surveys and reveals the poignant dialogue between
belonging and longing, between the ephemeral nature of things past and still
to come. In the combination of abstract and figurative qualities, Badenhorst
discloses a power-play between interiority and exteriority, coaxing the
viewer into the tactile but essentially mnemonic worlds created in these
works. Colour and mark-making becomes equivalent to a manner of inscription
of time: if one is to view the painting as object-static, then the evidence
of the act of painting reveals a perception-dynamic, not only evident in the
production of these works, but in the manner in which these works demand
active analysis. Personal references to time and the measurement of one’s
enclosure within time forms a central theme in these works, seen clearly in
titles such as: Death in Spring, The Missing Year and Waiting
time.
