The
building itself is approximately 50 years old that was originally a
residential house only to be converted later into office premises.
These were restored, redesigned and purposefully converted into its
present format by the owners.
The
gallery comprises approximately 120 m2 of exhibition space (click
for gallery layout plan)
where exhibitions of contemporary art are regularly held. The space
encompasses 4 large rooms and 2 passage areas. Outside there are
also multiple open spaces for sculpture in addition to a 75m2
covered patio that can be utilised for launches of various kinds.

In the studio various
art classes and courses offered throughout the year
presented by the best available visual arts experts.
BOOKING
OF EXHIBITION SPACE
To book space for an
exhibition you need to submit a proposal (refer to the gallery's policy)
to the art consultant at
art@friedcontemporary.com.

The
Gallery offers various exhibition packages with regard to
the renting of the gallery space, the commission structure,
catering, marketing aids and technology. Please contact the
gallery assistant.

The
gallery management teams will recruit work for exhibition
that is in line with the policy and mission of the gallery. Artists are
however more than welcome to approach the gallery with an
exhibition proposal and documentation of work. Please
contact the
art
consultant and curator in this
regard.
EXHIBITION PROPOSAL
Artists
should supply the gallery with:
-- a short bio of not more than
120 words
-- images of existing work
--
a paragraph on the theme/concept/content/background of the work;
--
a provisional list of the work intended for exhibition including
title, dimensions, materials.

Gallery owners: Charles Gijzelaar and
Elfriede Dreyer.

is a full-time associate professor at the Department of Visual Arts
of the University of Pretoria

Charles is an IT specialist and the
marketing manager for Inovo. In the gallery he assists with finances
and the installation of exhibitions.
The gallery assistant
is Daandrey Steyn.
GALLERY POLICY
It
is the Gallery's mission to exhibit and promote the work of contemporary
South African artists. Pan-African and other international artists are
however not excluded.
The
gallery aims to:
-
Promote young, upcoming and previously unrecognised
as well as established artists working in a contemporary idiom;
-
Maintain the criteria of quality, relevance and
concept in art exhibitions and promotions;
-
Deconstruct artmaking cultures of cliché;
-
Maintain an educational function by introducing the
public to the issues of taste, quality and relevance in artworks by way
of exhibitions, walkabouts, short courses and workshops in art-related
aspects;

Through the available expertise guide art investors
and collectors to make wise choices;
-
Through exhibitions as well as through the gallery's
website provide and build an information database on artists for use by
art scholars, collectors and the public.
